SANTO DOMINGO.- A National District Court yesterday revoked the writ of habeas corpus favoring former Dominican Municipal League undersecretary Amaury Guzmán, accused of heading a ring which obtained official passports with forged documents.

Appellate Court Penal Chamber judges Modesto Martinez, Pedro Sanchez and Esther Agelán ruled to send Guzman to criminal trial, after hearing the arguments by the prosecutors, who charged the defendant of forgery of official documents, criminal conspiracy, swindle, traffic of immigrants and bigamy.

It ruled that the Justice Ministry’s evidence meets the legal requirements, and admitted it as proof.

The Court rebuked the 7th Instruction Court’s verdict, which ruled that the transaction of requests for official passports and visas isn’t a punishable by law, noting that it violated judicial norms.
